SPIRIT OF THE SEASON DONATIONS RISE IN WAKE OF FIRE.

Byline: Gina Keating Staff Writer

ALTADENA - Gifts and goodwill overflowed the lobby of an Altadena home for children Friday as a community effort got under way to replace thousands of toys destroyed by fire in the house where they were stored.

``We have had an overwhelming response from the community,'' said Kay Riordan, Five Acres associate director of development. ``People are coming from all over.''

A fire Thursday morning at the house owned by Five Acres, a nonprofit treatment and education center for abused and neglected children, destroyed about 2,000 toys destined des·tine

Arson investigators said the fire probably started when a floor furnace in the 1930s-era house at 747 W. Mountain View St. ignited the dried-out hardwood floors.

Five Acres workers were kept busy Friday unloading boxes of toys that started arriving at first light from as far away as Anaheim and Newport Beach Newport Beach, residential and resort city (1990 pop. 66,643), Orange co., S Calif., on Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1906. People smiled and greeted each other as they passed, arms loaded with stuffed animals or boxes of Barbies and toy cars, on the narrow sidewalk leading to Five Acres' reception area.

The gifts poured in too quickly to keep track of, Riordan said, though Five Acres had no goals to meet.

``We just want to make sure the children's desires are taken care of,'' she said.

Anyone interested in donating toys can drop them off at Five Acres at 760 W. Mountain View St. in Altadena, or at Vroman's bookstore at 695 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. Unwrapped gifts must be dropped at Vroman's by 1 p.m. Sunday to guarantee they will reach the children by Christmas.

For more information, contact Riordan at Five Acres at (626) 844-1430 Ext. 294, or Linda Urban at Vroman's at (800) 769-BOOK.
