SPIRIT MOVES LA CANADA HIGH SENIOR.

Byline: Donna Huffaker Daily News Staff Writer

With four years of high school under his belt, Ronnie Park already has learned one of life's greatest lessons - academic work is important but happiness and benevolence BENEVOLENCE, duty. The doing a kind action to another, from mere good will, without any legal obligation. It is a moral duty only, and it cannot be enforced by law. A good wan is benevolent to the poor, but no law can compel him to be so.

BENEVOLENCE, English law.

It's not.

As Park prepares for graduation from La Canada High School, the 18-year-old leaves behind a legacy of good grades, school spirit, leadership and a penchant for making other people smile.

It's those characteristics that earned Park two coveted cov·et

awards last week: the Principal's Spirit Award and the Tom Webber Memorial Scholarship.

The latter is given by the friends of Tom Webber, a former La Canada High student killed in a bicycle crash about 10 years ago. The honor recognizes a student who bears a love for life and spirit.

``He epitomizes everything we think students should be. He's just an all-around good kid,'' said Wendy Nicoll, the high school activity director who recommended Park for the memorial award.

In the same humble way Park reluctantly speaks about his other accomplishments, the soon-to-be graduate merely said, ``I'm very honored.''

Aside from being a leader in the Associated Student Body, maintaining a place on the honors list and playing Spartan football since his sophomore year, Park is a trained peer counselor at his school. He listens to other students' problems and helps them help themselves.

``It's not about giving them advice. It's about hearing what they have to say and leading them to their own conclusions,'' he said.

To Park, psychology is intriguing, but he's not sure it's the field he will pursue in college. Accepted to the University of California, San Diego UCSD is consistently ranked among the top ten public universities for undergraduate education in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.[3] It is a Public Ivy. [1] For graduate studies, most of UCSD's Ph.D. , Park will begin his higher education higher education

as an ``undecided'' major. Not that that worries him, he said.

Park, who grew up in La Canada Flintridge, believes academic endeavors are important but said studying should not consume your life - life is too short for that, he said.

``You have to be happy and you have to smile at people. Being nice to people brightens their day and that's sometimes the most awesome gift you can give to anybody,'' he said.

La Canada High School Principal Doug Huckaby didn't hesitate in giving one of his four spirit awards to Park. Chuckling at the memory of Park with the gold and cardinal school colors painted on his face, Huckaby said in his 16 years as principal he's never seen a more spirited student. Reiterating Nicoll's characterization as an ``all-around good kid,'' Huckaby said Park has never missed a school event.

And what does this ``all-around good kid'' want to do when he grows up?

``I want to be a fireman.''
