SPIRAL Announces Sensor Web Services at Sensors Expo & Conference.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

AMHERST, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2003

The SPIRAL Group Announce New Smart Sensor Web The Sensor Web is a type of sensor network or geographic information system (GIS) that is especially well suited for environmental monitoring and control. The term describes a specific type of sensor network: an amorphous network of spatially distributed sensor platforms (  Services

The SPIRAL Group announces the immediate availability of a software plug-in for National Instruments National Instruments, or NI (NASDAQ: NATI), is an American company with over 4,000 employees and direct operations in 41 countries founded in 1976 by Dr. James Truchard, Bill Nowlin and Jeff Kodosky.  LabView(TM) systems called The Intelligent Sensor An intelligent sensor takes some predefined action when it senses the appropriate input (light, heat, sound, motion, touch, etc.). Description
The sensor has to do the following tasks:
  • Give a digital signal.
  • Be able to communicate the signal.
Communicator(TM). This software allows sensor data and simulated sensor data to communicate via an XML XML

Markup language developed to be a simplified and more structural version of SGML. It incorporates features of HTML (e.g., hypertext linking), but is designed to overcome some of HTML's limitations.

of subscribing clients. Central management tools assure that data is fully secure and is available only to those applications and users able to use it through a series of optional capabilities like digital certificates.

William Juch, Vice President of Strategy and Consulting at SPIRAL said, "Now sensor data can now be distributed to not just single monitoring systems or databases but to enterprise capabilities such as Excel(TM) spreadsheets and neural networks. Therefore models and simulations can be created, trained and evaluated during the prototype stage. After the sensor is implemented, sensor performance, performance of the monitored process and materials, and return on investment models such as pre-emptive pre·emp·tive or pre-emp·tive

maintenance can be tested, retrained, and updated. "

Systems employing Sensor Web Services(TM) can be deployed more quickly than traditional messaging systems and can also be retrofitted to existing corporate and laboratory systems with considerably less effort than conventional middleware. Since the systems operate asynchronously using the KnowNow router, there is no need for constant polling.. The Intelligent Sensor Communicator has an extremely small footprint and is installable and maintainable without programming.

"The next breakthrough in Sensor-based systems is Web-based delivery. SPIRAL has solved the challenge of proactively delivering data over the Web, where users often disconnect and reconnect from networks", says Ryan Rosenberg, vice president of marketing at KnowNow. "The Intelligent Sensor Communicator automatically delivers the right data to the person who needs to know it, in the form they need to see it, no matter how or where they are connected to the Web. The system is a great way to maximize the value of investments in National Instruments LabView."

The Intelligent Sensor Communicator is available immediately for $199. Communicators for other systems and protocols as well as complete sensor-based Intelligent Sensor Communicator(TM) systems are available on a custom basis.
