SPIKE LEE TO DIRECT 'CROOKLYN' FOR UNIVERSAL PICTURES

Acclaimed Filmmaker Will Also Co-Write and Appear
in First Film Under Long-Term Pact with Studio
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Spike Lee will begin production in July on "Crooklyn," it was announced today by Tom Pollock, chairman of the MCA Motion Picture Group, and Casey Silver, president of production for Universal Pictures.
The film, a family comedy about children growing up in Brooklyn in the early 1970s, marks the first project for the writer/director/producer since he signed a multiyear production agreement with Universal last September. A 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks production, it's also his first film since his critically acclaimed "Malcolm X."
The screenplay was written by Joie Lee, Cinque Lee (Lee's sister and brother, respectively) and Lee, who will produce, direct and have a role in the film. The executive producers are John Kilik and Preston Holmes. The co-producer is Monty Ross.
"We're very excited about Crooklyn,'" said Pollock. "It's a different direction for Spike Lee from his previous films, yet like all his work it will be both entertaining and provocative."
"Crooklyn" is the fourth film from Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks production company to be released through Universal. Previously, he wrote, directed and starred in the Universal releases "Do the Right Thing," "Mo' Better Blues" and "Jungle Fever." In addition to "Malcolm X," Lee's other films include "She's Gotta Have It" and "School Daze."
"Crooklyn" will be filmed on location in Brooklyn, N.Y. Universal has tentatively scheduled the film for release in summer 1994.
