On Monday, she was busy sanding old blue paint off an administration building door, uncovering other colors layered underneath from previous paint jobs at the 35-year-old campus.

``We're cleaning up and freshening up. We're getting everything prepared for the school for the kids,'' Santos said. ``A clean environment is more positive for the kids.''

The maintenance work includes projects big and small - from $251,478 to reroof one of the school's four quad buildings to changing light bulbs in classrooms.

Other work includes laying new concrete pads for eating areas, moving equipment and furniture, painting trash cans In the Macintosh, a simulated garbage can used for deleting files and folders. ``We take the money allocated for site improvement and try to make that go as far as it can go,'' Willibrand said. ``My philosophy is when kids come back, if it all looks groomed, clean and fresh, they get the idea that it needs to stay groomed, clean and fresh.''
