Forms filed by Tuesday night's deadline were released Wednesday by the city.

Leading the pack is retired sheriff's chief Bob Spierer, who's raised $68,822, which includes a $50,000 personal loan to his campaign committee.

Laurie Ender, a city parks and recreation commissioner, has raised $36,698, which includes a $15,000 personal loan.

Maria Gutzeit, who owns an environmental consulting Environmental consulting is often a form of compliance consulting, in which the consultant ensures that the client maintains an appropriate measure of compliance with environmental regulations.  business and serves as vice president of the Newhall County Water District board, has raised $22,797, including a $10,000 personal loan.

"It's always a show of seriousness when you donate your own money to the campaign, but also you need to get contributions from people in the community to demonstrate you have support," Gutzeit said of the prevalence of personal campaign loans. "It's always a goal to raise enough money to pay yourself back."

Planning Commissioner Diane Trautman has raised $20,985, including a $16,000 personal loan.

Councilman Bob Kellar, who's seeking a third four-year term, has raised $34,186.

The filings span the first six months of 2007. There is no limit on fundraising. The maximum contribution allowed for individuals and businesses alike is $360, but there is no limit to the personal funds candidates can invest in their campaigns.

Spierer, Ender, Gutzeit and Trautman made unsuccessful bids for a council appointment to fill the remaining term of Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited.

Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he
 after Smyth took a state Assembly seat this year.

Boydston's selection hinged in part on his vow not to run in 2008, and so far he has kept the promise. His mandatory campaign-disclosure form shows no fundraising committee has been formed, no contributions collected.

Boydston, who has turned up the heat on Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's controversial expansion plan now before the council, has said he might run in 2010 or seek a different seat.

Former candidates John Grannis, Mark Hershey Hershey, uninc. city (1990 pop. 11,860), Dauphin co., S central Pa.; founded 1903 as a planned community built for workers at the Hershey Corp., the chocolate manufacturer that remains its largest employer.  and Lynne Plambeck have not expressed intent to run and have raised no money toward campaigns for the 2008 election. but filed campaign disclosure statements as required by the election laws.

Michael Cruz, who ran in 2006, has not yet filed a statement.
