SPEND `30 DAYS' THAT WILL OPEN YOUR EYES.Byline: David Kronke Television Critic Morgan Spurlock's genial genial /ge·ni·al/ (je-ni´al) mental (2). ge·ni·al or ge·ni·an adj. The series, which returns for another six-episode season on FX, aspires to something few other reality shows do: to expand rather than diminish its participants' minds. In each episode, participants engage in a culture clash Culture Clash is the name of:

Frank is unafraid to argue his position with the family with a zeal bordering on virulence, yet he's not unsympathetic to the family's plight. But Spurlock sugarcoats the facts: George has complained about how the episode suggests he has softened his views, insisting he hasn't. Thoroughly depicting Frank's conflicting emotions would have been honest, and it would have created greater drama. So the show is guilty of over-simplifying an urgent debate, though the debate remains fascinating nonetheless. Next week, Chris Jobin, an American computer programmer who lost his job to outsourcing, treks to India to experience life through the prism of those who have benefited, if only slightly, from the plight of millions of unemployed Americans. Though the episode unmasks some of the darker secrets of outsourcing, it boasts a funny scene in which Jobin must attend a seminar assisting prospective Indian employees in perfecting their American accents. In the final installment, Spurlock -- who became famous for spending a month pigging out on fast food in the Oscar-nominated film ``Super Size Me'' -- spends a few emotionally brutal, dehumanizing weeks in jail. While the point seems to be to underscore that the war on drugs is a bust -- most inmates he encounters are there on drug charges, straining the prison system's capacity -- Spurlock spends his last few days of internment internment, in international law, detention of the nationals or property of an enemy or a belligerent. Certainly, it's refreshing to see a reality series that emphasizes more than just cheap confrontation and vain preening. But Spurlock needn't soft-pedal the messy realities he seeks to explore.
