SPELLING'S SERIOUS SIDE : WITH `JIMMY,' HE STRIVES FOR AWARENESS.

Byline: Keith Marder Daily News Television Writer

Aaron Spelling's productions usually seem to work out.

By the end of the hour, there were always three happy couples on ``The Love Boat,'' the trio of stylish investigators always seemed to get their man on ``Charlie's Angels'' and Mr. Roarke and Tattoo made every trip a learning experience on ``Fantasy Island This articlearticle or section has multiple issues:

But sometimes it's tough even for Spelling to find a completely happy ending for a story.

Take tonight's ``After Jimmy'' (9 p.m. on KCBS KCBS Kansas City Barbecue Society
KCBS Korea Christian Book Service (now called KCB; Seoul, Korea)
KCBS Kerala Catholic Bible Society (Kerala, India)
, Channel 2).

The movie is about Jimmy Stapp, a handsome, smart and athletic teen who commits suicide during his senior year of high school.

It is a somber look at how such a horrific event tears apart a family. By the end, family members learn to deal with the loss of Jimmy, but there's no way the ending can be totally happy.

This is not the first time Spelling has tackled a serious subject. He was behind HBO's acclaimed ``And the Band Played On And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic is a best-selling work of nonfiction written by San Francisco Chronicle journalist Randy Shilts published in 1987. ,'' as well as ``The Boy in the Plastic Bubble.'' He produced the series ``Family,'' and he's very hands-on with one of his latest projects, ``7th Heaven,'' another family drama. Even ``Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. , 90210'' deals with many serious subjects, most recently AIDS.

,'' Spelling said. ``You can do some drecky little TV movies and then do a `Boy in the Plastic Bubble.' Then you can do 10 more drecky ones and do `The Best Little Girl in the World.' ''

``After Jimmy'' is definitely a quality show with a stellar cast, including Meredith Baxter Meredith Baxter (born June 21, 1947 in South Pasadena, California) is an American actress. Her mother was the late actress and sitcom creator Whitney Blake, and her father is Tom Baxter, who worked in radio. Her stepfather is sitcom writer, Allan Manings. , Bruce Davison, Peter Focinelli and Eva Marie Saint. Spelling thinks it is good enough for an Emmy nomination.

``I couldn't imagine anything worse,'' Spelling said of teen suicide. ``My son is 17, and that just freaked me out. We finally won the prize. We're No. 1 in teen suicide. We beat Japan. We won the pennant. I couldn't sit through the dailies. I was just staggered by it.''

Spelling says he has always been haunted by suicide. When he was growing up in Texas, there was a tough neighborhood kid who took his own life because he stole something and was scared of the punishment he would get from his abusive father.

``I couldn't understand it,'' Spelling remembered. ``I didn't think he was afraid of anything. I was sure as hell afraid of him.''

Spelling, who was greatly bothered by the deaths of John Belushi John Adam Belushi (January 24, 1949 – March 5, 1982) was an Emmy Award-winning American comedian, actor and musician, notable for his work on Saturday Night Live, National Lampoon's Animal House and The Blues Brothers.  and River Phoenix, would like his next serious project to deal with teen drug use.

``I still can't get over River Phoenix,'' Spelling said. ``Tori was at that club (the Viper Room) the night before. It was River Phoenix this time; who will it be next time?''

Spelling said that the networks don't seem interested in another drug movie right now.
