SPEEDWAY TACKLES TRAFFIC PROBLEMS: NEW PARKING PLAN READY.

Byline: Louis Brewster Staff Writer

Perhaps the most important question a race fan might ask this weekend is not about seat location, but about the color of the parking pass.

Beginning with Sunday's Auto Club 500, a new parking plan will be implemented that reflects the expertise of Gameday Management Group. It is designed to create a smoother traffic flow and put fans as close as possible to their seats at California Speedway The California Speedway is a two-mile, low-banked, D-shaped oval superspeedway in Fontana, California, similar to that of "sister track" Michigan International Speedway. It is located approximately 40 miles east of Los Angeles on the site of the former Kaiser Steel mill. .

Traffic issues have been a constant among race fans in every survey conducted by the speedway.

``We have been communicating with our guests nonstop since I arrived, and we heard their concerns about traffic and made a commitment to them to improve the traffic plan,'' California Speedway president Gllian Zucker said.

Gameday Management has helped organize six Super Bowls, the latest in Detroit earlier in the month; Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests. The Olympics of Ancient Greece

in Atlanta, Salt Lake City and the ongoing events in Turin; presidential inaugurations; Major League Baseball's All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games ; and International Speedway Corp. properties, such as the Fontana track.

The key to the plan is the color-coded passes. The pass corresponds with the entry gate and the designated parking lot. Additionally, each pass contains a suggested route - with a printed map - of what freeways and surface streets to use in reaching the track.

And after the race, the plan provides what Gameday calls ``an equally efficient exit.''

) and the parking management company, Gameday will monitor the progress of about 30,000 cars trying to get in before the green flag drops at 1:10 p.m.

Gameday counted each space in all lots and created the exact number of passes. Tailgaters, who often took two or three spaces in previous years, will be strictly monitored.

What about those who have tickets at will call, or simply decide on Sunday morning Sunday Morning may refer to:
  • "Sunday Morning (radio program)", a Canadian radio program formerly aired on CBC Radio One
  • CBS News Sunday Morning, a television news program on CBS in the United States
  • Sunday Morning (TBS TV series)
 to attend the race?

Gameday has software that will allow those fans to print passes off home computers that will direct them to the auxiliary parking lot on California Steel property.

Parking maps and routes are available on the speedway's Web site, www.californiaspeedway.com.
