SPEEDO JUNIOR NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS: SUN SETS BLISTERING PACE IN 200 RELAY CLOCKS 26.15 SECONDS ON ANCHOR LEG IN JUNIOR NATIONALS.

Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News

IRVINE - When Sara Sun qualified for the championship heat in the 50- and 500-yard freestyles at the 2004 Southern Section Div. I finals, she was the only swimmer in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  to attempt the interesting double.

Sun switched to the 200 and 500 this past spring, winning her first division title in the 500 in May. She continued to show her distance prowess Aug. 3 at the ConocoPhillips Senior National Championships by securing a berth at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials with her performance in the 800-meter freestyle.

Despite her accomplishments, Swim Pasadena coach Terry Stoddard still believed Sun was a great sprinter. The 16-year-old proved her coach right Wednesday night at the Speedo An earlier scalable font technology from Bitstream Inc., Cambridge, MA (www.bitstream.com). Speedo fonts used the .SPD extension. Sun clocked 26.15 seconds on the anchor leg of the 200-meter freestyle relay - the fastest split of all 180 swimmers competing in the event - to help Swim Pasadena to a second-place finish Noun 1. second-place finish - a finish in second place (as in a race)

``I couldn't really see anything. I knew I just had to go out and swim fast,'' said Sun, who will be a junior at Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. ``I didnt really know how fast I was going, so it's an unexpected, good surprise.''

Sun's relay performance was her third swim of the day and 11th in the past eight, counting last week's Senior Nationals.

But the U.S. Junior National team member, who also placed 10th in the 100 free (58.56), didn't show any signs of fatigue competing under the lights.

``It's very special for me and it's really exciting for us as a team because we're all like best friends,'' said Sun, who joined Bianca Marquez (Flintridge Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

Alex Sullivan (Newbury Park), Camille Duckett (Thousand Oaks) and Alexandra Nalevanko (Camarillo) swam the final three legs en route to a 24th-place finish (1:51.46).

Patrick Simpkins, who will be a senior at Crespi of Encino, took eighth in the men's 200 butterfly (2:06.41). The 17-year-old, who won the Div. I title in the 100 butterfly, had recorded his lifetime best with a 2:04.75 in the prelims.

``A lot of fatigue (set in the final 50 meters). It's been a busy two weeks, but I came back (Wednesday night) and really went for it,'' said Simpkins, who clocked 2:04.81 in the prelims Aug. 4 at Senior Nationals.

``Especially between prelims and finals, the thought of (getting the Olympic Trials cut of 2:03.99) entered my mind. But I know it's right around the corner.''

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City graduate Alexa Merz, who will attend Stanford in the fall, took 16th in the 100 free (59.17) and anchored Westside Aquatics - featuring former high school teammate Katie Wong - to a 20th-place finish in the relay (1:51.25).
