SPECTRUM DEMONSTRATES SECOND MWAVE MULTIMEDIA PRODUCT TO IBM; PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION SET FOR ANNUAL MEETING, MAY 26

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectrum Signal Processing Inc., (AMEX: SNL.EC; Vancouver: SSY) the leading supplier of computer boards based on Digital Signal Processing (DSP), today announced it has completed the prototype of OfficeCom, its second multimedia PC board based on the MWAVE(TM)DSP chip developed by Texas Instruments and IBM. The product specification was developed jointly with IBM.
OfficeCom joins the recently announced AudioCom as the newest member in a series of Spectrum PC boards targeted at PC multimedia. It is designed specifically for small business, home office and telecommuter markets offering integrated V.32bis modem, facsimile, telephone answering machine, 8 bit audio and voice capabilities all on one board in the same price range as conventional fax/modem is today. OfficeCom is also software upgradeable to provide future functions such as voice recognition and color fax with no new hardware. Spectrum intends to deliver future DSP software, thereby providing an ongoing revenue stream.
Spectrum demonstrated a hardware prototype of OfficeCom to IBM earlier this month at IBM's Raleigh, N.C., MWAVE headquarters.
"Spectrum's development of OfficeCom is an excellent example of the modularity and speed-to-market advantages of MWAVE. We were very impressed with the speed at which Spectrum was able to develop and demonstrate the OfficeCom prototype," said Eric Broockman, MWAVE product line manager at IBM.
Barry Jinks, Spectrum's president and chief executive officer, commented, "We are fortunate to be working so closely with IBM on this project. This is the second of a family of multimedia products that Spectrum has under development. We have utilized our market- leading DSP capabilities to develop a product that significantly surpasses conventional fixed function technology. Using programmable DSP technology, we intend to provide a long-term solution to a market that is currently projected to purchase over 9 million units of fax/modem & sound boards, in 1994 alone."
Spectrum will sell OfficeCom directly to OEM customers and the end-user market through various channels. The first public demonstration of OfficeCom is set for Spectrum's Annual General Meeting on May 26, at the company's Burnaby, British Columbia, headquarters and customer beta tests will occur in August.
