SPECTRAN SIGNS CONTRACTS TO SUPPLY THREE CUSTOMERS WITH $27 MILLION

IN GLASS OPTICAL FIBER IN 1992-3; CURRENT BACKLOG REACHES $30 MILLION
STURBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- SpecTran Corporation (NASDAQ: SPTR) announced today the extension to the end of 1993 of two- year supply agreements with two major customers and a two-year contract with another customer that should result in combined shipments of glass optical fiber of approximately $13 million in 1992 and $14 million in 1993. The contracts which were extended were scheduled to expire at the end of 1992.
The receipt of these contracts increases the company's current backlog, to approximately $30 million, of which about half is expected to be delivered in 1992. The supply agreements cover several of SpecTran's standard multimode optical fiber products used in a variety of customer premises and datacommunication applications.
"These agreements reflect the continuing strong demand for multimode optical fiber products in the U.S. and our strong customer relationships built on SpecTran's ability to supply quality products at competitive prices," Raymond E. Jaeger, president and chief executive officer, said.
