SPECTACULAR BID TRAINER DELP DIES.Byline: Daily News Staff and Wire Services Bud Delp Grover Greer "Bud" Delp (September 7 1932 - December 29 2006) was an American Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse trainer best remembered for his conditioning of Hall of Fame colt, Spectacular Bid. , the Hall of Fame trainer who guided Spectacular Bid to Kentucky Derby Kentucky Derby One of the classic U.S. Thoroughbred horse races. It was established in 1875 and run annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs track in Louisville, Ky. With the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, it makes up U.S. racing's coveted Triple Crown. and Preakness victories in 1979 and an undefeated season in 1980, died Friday of cancer in Ellicott City, Md. He was 74. Delp was ninth on the career wins list with 3,674, his horses earning nearly $41 million in purses. But his proudest achievements involved Spectacular Bid, whom Delp called ``the greatest horse ever to look through a bridle'' and who is generally considered one of the greatest American thoroughbreds. The season after Spectacular Bid captured the first two legs of the Triple Crown and finished third in the Belmont Stakes, the colt was undefeated in nine races, including the Strub Stakes and Santa Anita Handicap The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in the late winter at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses three years old and up, and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during . Delp earned the Eclipse Award for Trainer of the Year. Delp is survived by his wife, Regina, three sons, a daughter and two grandsons. Ridden by Jon Court, the 3-year-old filly paid $9. Favored Balance finished third.
