SPECIALIZED DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT INC. (SDMI) AND
 TEAMSTERS RESOLVE HIRING DISPUTE
TRACY, Calif., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Specialized Distribution Management Inc. (SDMI), the operator of Safeway's new distribution center in Tracy announced yesterday that the few remaining issues blocking agreement with the Teamsters union regarding the hiring of current Safeway employees will be referred to a federal arbitrator in order to quickly resolve the dispute.
"In our talks last week we came very close to an agreement with the union. Out of concern for long-time Safeway employees, we and the union have agreed to send the few unresolved issues to a federal arbitrator for quick resolution," said Brenda Crum, co-owner of SDMI. Crum noted the unresolved issues deal with fine points in the wage and benefits package.
According to Crum, all Safeway employees affected by the opening of the Tracy distribution center are being offered employment at their current wage levels. She also reported that SDMI this week had curtailed its hiring from outside the Safeway pool in anticipation of reaching a last-minute agreement with the Teamsters union.
Crum stressed, however, that no employee currently employed by SDMI at the new Tracy center will be displaced by the agreement. To date, SDMI has hired approximately 475 employees, of which 140 are Safeway employees and 335 are from outside this pool. The new center officially opens May 1.
Since the last of March SDMI has been in negotiations with the Teamsters union regarding the hiring of approximately 650 employees at the Richmond and Fremont distribution centers, San Leandro milk plant, ant Oakland ice cream plant.
