SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETES TO COMPETE.

Antelope Valley Special Olympics will host its 10th annual Hi-Desert Classic on Saturday, an event that draws more than 500 athletes from throughout Southern California.

Antelope Valley athletes have been training since September for the event, said Dennis Wick, director of the games.

``This is the culmination of the practice and training,'' Wick said. ``It's a chance for them to show what they do and what they've learned. It's the Super Bowl for them.''

The games will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the opening ceremonies in Marauder MARAUDER. The opening ceremonies are scheduled to include the parade of athletes, a Veterans of Foreign Wars color guard, the A.V. College marching band, a performance by the Antelope Valley Youth Chorale chorale (kōrăl`, –räl`), any of the traditional hymns of the German Protestant Church. The form was developed after the Reformation to replace the plainsong of the earlier service and as a means of congregational participation in , the lighting of the Olympic torch and the release of pigeons.

The event also serves as a chance to qualify for the state games, held the following weekend at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

Track and field, tennis and softball competitions will be held at the college; gymnastics at the First Baptist Church First Baptist Church may refer to many churches: Canada

Admission is free.

``We would like to see a lot of people out there,'' Wick said.
