Special activities are planned throughout the last week of March in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  to celebrate the life of Cesar Chavez Noun 1. Chavez was founder and president of the United Farm Workers of America The United Farm Workers of America (UFW) began in 1962 as a coalition of poorly paid migrant farm workers and grew into a powerful Labor Union that has consistently fought to increase wages and improve working conditions for its members.  and is recognized in California and throughout the nation for his work on behalf of the rights of migrant farm workers and his dedication to justice, education and democracy for people everywhere.

``Cesar Chavez was a remarkable individual who possessed a genuine sense of understanding and compassion for his community and the community of all people,'' said Gerald Solomon, president of Public Health Foundation Enterprises Inc., one of the sponsors of the Cesar Chavez Week activities.

Los Angeles County's Cesar Chavez Community Service Week leads into the state of California's official Cesar Chavez holiday, April 1.

The special events were launched in Los Angeles with a photo exhibit, ``Saluting the Life and Values of an American Hero American Hero may refer to:
  • American Hero (novel), written by Larry Beinhart
  • The Greatest American Hero
,'' which opened to the public Friday and will run through March 31 at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, 900 Exposition Blvd. in Los Angeles. There is free admission to this exhibit Saturday.

On Tuesday the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is the five member governing board of Los Angeles County, California. Members of the board of supervisors are elected by district, the current members as of April 2006 are:
  • District 1: Gloria Molina, Democrat
 will hold a Cesar Chavez presentation at 9:30 a.m. in the County Hall of Administration, Room 381-B at 500 W. Temple St.

Scores of other events are scheduled throughout the week at libraries and parks, including a Cesar Chavez storytelling program at 3:30 p.m. Fridayat the San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina
