SAUGUS - Dar and Dale Emme brought the painful story of their teen-age son's suicide to hundreds of Saugus High students Thursday, sharing the horror that created so much pain and, seven years later, a suicide prevention Suicide prevention is an umbrella term for the collective efforts of mental health practitioners and related professionals to reduce the incidence of suicide through proactive preventive measures.  program known throughout the world.

The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program was born within hours of Mike's 1994 suicide in the family driveway in Colorado, his mother, Dar, told the silent audience Thursday.

The program emerged from the words she repeated to her son's friends - talk to someone when you're in pain.

``Adults don't really talk about suicide. Sometimes they think that talking about it will cause it to happen,'' she said, her husband, Dale, nodding. ``But suicide's not about death, it's about pain. Unrelenting pain that is inside of your being.''

``A friend of mine attempted suicide a few years ago,'' said Will Shipley, a Saugus High senior, after the assembly. ``(The Emmes) were right. It's not about wanting to kill yourself, it's about a cry for help. Dale Emme explained that cards passed out to the audience that advised people to stay with, talk to and get help for a suicidal person are lifelines.

``It reminded me of my own personal experiences. And if more people get involved, it could help start a club at this school for people who don't know about the program,'' Simon said. ``I admire them so much to be able to come and say this.''

Parents, students and community members are invited to hear the Emmes speak tonight at 7 in the Valencia High theater, where they will share the story of their son and his suicide's impact on their lives.
