SPE conference 2004; Photography and Place: home/neighborhood/nation/world.newport (RI), March 25-28, 2004.


Place is space with character. This year for the 41st annual conference of the Society for Photographic Education The Society for Photographic Education is a non-profit membership organization that provides a forum for the discussion of photography and related media as a means of creative expression and cultural insight. , place meant Newport, Rhode Island Newport is a city in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Providence. It is the home of Naval Station Newport, housing the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center. , founded in 1639. Photography and Place, is a typical theme for a restricted as well as dominant genre in photography, landscape. How is our sense of place affected by evidences of globalization globalization

At SPE SPE - Software Practice and Experience  2004, photographers and video makers played with such concepts in various ways, though one seemed to be dominant: documentary interpretations of specific areas. In the light of the past thirteen years, a different usage of the term has emerged: territory, a rather paradoxical emergence in an age of "globalization." Pseudo-globalization would probably be more correct as we are witnessing commercial and (pseudo) diplomatic behaviors that have nothing to do with a global approach to problems, and the global welfare of humanity. The apparent logical progression from local to global, home to world appears to be more problematic than one might expect.  address these issues? The role, the meaning and future of our relationships to place and space evolves with the definition of boundaries: boundaries between private and public spaces, as well as between religions and cultures. All these issues are at the heart of most conflicts, and conflicts have been occupying the forefront of our discourse for the past months. However, the theme of the conference sometimes remained a remote pretext, in spite of the efforts of the organizers (in that respect the invitation of Mark Sealy, the director of Autograph, the Association of Black Photographers in London as a featured speaker was an excellent initiative).

The first keynote speaker, whose career in landscape photography has been widely celebrated from New Topographics New Topographics is a movement in photographic art in which the landscape is depicted without sentimental representation of the world we inhabit as being a place we do not exist in.  to the French D.A.T.A.R. project, was Frank Gohlke Frank Gohlke is a leading figure in American landscape photography. He has been awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.  With such a lifetime achievement, the sole presentation of his work would have delighted his audience What Gohlke did however, to the dismay of a portion of his audience, was he spoke for about 90 minutes on the photographic work of Herbert Gleason of which only eight images were shown. The audience was later told that the archive comprised over 8,000 images.

Friday evening started with Mark Sealy's presentation on Black photographers against the background of British photography British photography refers to the tradition of photographic work undertaken by committed photographers and photographic artists in the British Isles. This includes those notable photographers from Europe who have made their home in Britain and contributed so strongly to the ; opening on photographic practices outside the American borders by a native practitioner was innovative, refreshing, and informative. Ken Burns introduced Honored Educator Jerome Liebling as his teacher from undergraduate days at Hampshire college Hampshire College, at Amherst, Mass.; coeducational; opened 1970. The emphasis of the academic program is on the individual needs of the students. Liebling's address was rather short but humorous, philosophical, and provocative; the qualities of a good teacher. Liebling stated that "The spirit of photography is ultimately a way of seeing and encountering the world. That which is photography in its purest sense is still its strongest possibility." The single reached 27 in the UK in its first week, selling only 9,000 copies and over 16,000 copies as of January 2007. One of the key exhibitions of the saturday tour was the latest work by the Parke-Harrisons: new images in a fashion that they have refined for a few years now. A presentation of their photographic collaboration had been given earlier that day at the conference and had drawn a wide audience.

With over 50 presentations in two days, the 2004 conference had much to offer, from historical, to sociological, factual, political, philosophical, or esthetic es·thet·ic

 the various events covered a broad spectrum of preoccupations. The response to this conference should confirm the recently observed increase in memberships. Two aspects of the 2004 conference probably added to the satisfaction of the members: emphasis was given to new members with workshops and presentation aimed at helping young attendees with their first steps in the professional world, from teaching to exhibiting. The traditional portfolio review was also well attended. Last but not least, the main quality of all conferences has been the social activity that they generate. Coming to the conference is a unique opportunity to meet and connect with other members of the photographic community. Seen from the point of view of this magazine, the conference was an rare opportunity to see new work by a wide variety of photographers. The two galleries of this issue (pp.14-15, and p.28) feature the works of two photographers met at the conference, Joseph Mougel and Jane Austen Stevens. More will come.

As the 2004 conference was coming to a close, the dates and location of the next SPE reunion were announced: Passage (issues of exploration and transition), the 42nd conference will be in Portland (OR), March 17-20, 2004.
