SPARTANS READY TO REFOCUS AFTER STARTING OFF 18-0, LA CANADA GETS `REALITY CHECK' AFTER TAKING FIRST LOSS.

The La Canada High boys' basketball team opened plenty of eyes by winning their first 18 games -- including titles in its firstthreetournaments -- by an average of 18 points.

With seven games left in the regular season, thoughts about an unblemished record began to surface.

Perhaps that's why LaCanada overlooked Monrovia on Wednesday and lost for the first time this year, 57-50, to fall into a first-place tie with the Wildcats in the Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

``At some point you're going to stumble, so at least we got it out of the way,'' said La Canada coach Tom Hofman, whose team plays three games over a 24-hour span this weekend.

``We're going to see what we're made of,'' Hofman said. ``Losing before this stretch of the season isn't the worst thing that could have happened to us.

``We're going to be better because of it. Now, there's no pressure. Now, I'll be able to get these guys focused again. We're going to bring back some of the intensity that's been missing lately.''

La Canada is no stranger to streaks. Two years ago, the Spartans opened the season with a program-record 20 victories in a row, and the 1991-92 team owns the school's all-time mark for consecutive wins with 22.

The Spartans will go as far as Adam Malik Adam Malik (22 July, 1917 - 5 September, 1984) was Indonesia's third vice president. Early life

``We thought we could just show up and win. It was a reality check.

``We're not going to let that happen again. We know we have to go 100 percent all the time now.''

Darren Ho and Christian Nito are also vital parts for the Spartans. Ho is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points and Nito is the team's floor leader, averaging 3.7 assists.

``I think all the guys are going to be able to relax now that there's no streak to worry about,'' Hofman said.

Whether that happens remains to be seen. One thing is certain: it will be interesting to see how La Canada responds to its first taste of adversity.

``We're learned a lot about ourselves after the loss and are a stronger team now,'' Nito said. ``We think we can go out there and prove that we can return to our winning form.''

Q & A ... WITH ANDREANNA MARSHALL

A senior guard on the L.A. Baptist of North Hills girls' basketball team, Marshall leads the area in scoring, averaging 26.6 points per game. The 5-foot-6 standout has scored at least 40 points in a game twice this season, while she has been limited to fewer than 20 points three times in 20 games for the Knights (14-6 overall, 5-0 Delphic League).

AM: It's exciting because I never really expected it. Somebody told me where I ranked earlier this season, and I didn't even believe them. I looked myself and saw it, and I still didn't believe it. I've always known I had the ability to score a lot of points, but this season has been really special.

DN: Such a high scoring average means you have to take a lot of shots. Does coach Mary Christiansen and your teammates give you the green light to shoot as often as you like?

AM: I pretty much have the green light, but I make sure not to misuse it. There are times I've taken some pretty dumb shots this season, and coach Christiansen has let me know about it. I just try to lead the team the best way I know how, and that's by putting the ball in the basket.

DN: You averaged 18.5 points per game last season, and 14 points per game as a sophomore. How do you explain the improvement you have made after each season?

AM: I became a gym rat Noun 1. gym rat - someone who spends all leisure time playing sports or working out in a gymnasium or health spa

AM: I would say they're wrong, because there are plenty of examples of smaller girls who play at that level. People also underestimate me because L.A. Baptist is a smaller school. Because of that, I play with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder. I definitely think I can make it at the next level.
