SPARTANS' VICTORY NOT A THING OF BEAUTY GABLE RUNS FOR 206 YARDS IN PENALTY-MARRED GAME SYLMAR 28, SAN FERNANDO 15.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Special to the Daily News

Rivalries can bring out the best in teams. But Friday night's Sylmar-San Fernando showdown wasn't the most well-played game.

There were 201 yards in penalties; a knocked-out referee; and an almost quiet 206 rushing yards and two touchdowns by Sylmar running back C.J. Gable in Sylmar's 28-15 Mission Valley League victory.

The 10th-ranked Spartans (9-0, 4-0) clinched the league title and need only to beat Monroe next week to complete a perfect regular season.

(5-3, 2-2), located less than five miles from Sylmar, shared the league title last year with the Spartans and had its sights set on winning it again. But the Tigers managed just 83 yards of total offense and were flagged for four personal fouls and 81 penalty yards.

Sylmar, meanwhile, had 120 yards in penalties, including seven personal fouls; and a Sylmar fan was kicked off the sideline.

Gable, the area's leading rusher, carried 26 times and gained most of his yards in the second half. He scored both of his team's second-half touchdowns, on runs of 1 and 14 yards.

That was the positive. The negative was that Gable was called for a personal foul for jawing at the San Fernando players, almost got ejected for more trash talk trash talk
