SPARKS TO FACE RESILIENT COMETS IN WEST FINALS.

Byline: Pamela Lewis Staff Writer

The pain of losing their teammate is very much present. It's been only a week since Kim Perrot Kim Perrot (January 18, 1967 — August 19, 1999), was an American basketball player. She played in the WNBA for the Houston Comets.

The series moves to Houston's Compac Center on Sunday, and if necessary, Monday.

Facing the reigning champs, who lost only six of their 32 regular-season games, the Sparks know they can't afford a sluggish start like they had Tuesday against the Sacramento Monarchs The Sacramento Monarchs is a Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) team based in Sacramento, California. The team is one of the WNBA's eight original franchises and was noted early on for standout players Ticha Penicheiro, Ruthie Bolton and Yolanda Griffith. . They trailed by 11 at halftime but were able to pull out a 71-58 victory in that first-round single elimination game behind Lisa Leslie's 22 points.

But it came only after Sparks coach Orlando Woolridge Orlando Vernada Woolridge (born December 16 1959 in Bernice, Louisiana) is a former professional basketball player in the NBA.

The Sparks are 2-2 against the Comets and the only team to win two games against them. But two-time Most Valuable Player Cynthia Cooper There are two different public figures with the name Cynthia Cooper:

She sat out after flying to Los Angeles a day after Perrot, her best friend, died following a battle with cancer.

``I feel better,'' said Cooper, the WNBA scoring leader who returned to the court the following night and had 27 points in the Comets' 74-65 victory over Utah in the final regular-season game. `` . . . You don't cope, I lost my mother six months ago, I lost my best friend . . . How do you cope?''

If anything, the Comets are a stronger team because of Perrot's positive spirit.

``We've been through a lot this year and this is adding to what we've gone through all season long,'' said the Comets' Sheryl Swoopes, who is separated from her husband. ``I think as a team we've done very well sticking together. It shouldn't be anything different.''
