SPARKS ON A SIZZLING-HOT DAY RAPID SERIES OF SMALL BRUSH BLAZES KEEPS FIRE CREWS BUSY.

An 18-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of setting a fire along the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley.  at Escondido Canyon Road, officials said.

The blaze was the first in a series of fires that sprang up in rapid succession early Saturday afternoon and were extinguished by county and Forest Service firefighters.

According to the California Highway Patrol, members of the public reported seeing the fire set by young suspects with a flare gun. Sheriff's department officials at the Palmdale office could not confirm whether such an instrument was involved. The cause of the nine other fires was not immediately known.

The spot fires, each contained to no more than two acres apiece, were reported along a 20-mile stretch of the freeway as far north as Red Rover Mine Road and as far south as the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  and Highway 14 interchange.

Specific locations included Crown Valley Road, Agua Dulce Canyon Road, Golden Valley Road, Placerita Canyon Road, San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , Sierra Highway and Dockweiler Drive and The Old Road where it crosses under the freeway.
