The Phoenix Mercury The Phoenix Mercury is a Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) team based in Phoenix, Arizona and the current WNBA champions. The Mercury began in 1997 as one of the league's original eight teams. The Mercury are named because Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.  played a zone defense Friday night, daring the Sparks to beat them from the perimeter.

She announced her retirement from the Los Angeles Sparks on June 11, 2007.  led the Sparks (12-4) with 18points and Leslie added 16.

Cappie Pondexter scored 21points and Diana Taurasi contributed 19 for Phoenix (6-8).
