 -- and the Sparks -- depends on the performance of a fax machine.

Sometime late Tuesday night or early this morning, a small group of league executives with gather in a room at the Intersport Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla. and literally wait by the fax machine.

Tennessee star Candace Parker Candace Nicole Parker (born April 19, 1986 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American collegiate basketball player, playing for the University of Tennessee. She may be best known for being the first woman to dunk in an NCAA tournament game and the first woman to dunk twice in a college  has until 10 a.m. Eastern time today to fax in her intent to forgo her final year of eligibility and make herself available for this year's WNBA draft The WNBA Draft is an annual draft held by the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) through which WNBA teams can select new players from a talent pool of college and professional women's basketball players. The first WNBA draft was held in 1997. , which begins at 1 p.m. Eastern.

A league spokesperson confirmed Tuesday that Parker, who helped the Volunteers defeat Stanford 64-48 in the women's national title game Tuesday, has not filed her paperwork to enter the draft.

It's making for anxious moments for the WNBA and the Sparks, who own the No. 1 pick in the draft.

The Sparks have fielded overtures from just about every team in the league, wondering if they might be tempted to part with the pick. But the Sparks are expected to begin building their franchise around her and center Lisa Leslie
