USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  recruited forward Adam Spanich as a 3-point specialist, but coach Henry Bibby Charles Henry Bibby (born November 24, 1949 in Franklinton, North Carolina) is a former professional basketball player and current assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).  never dreamed the junior-college transfer would become almost the entire Trojans offense.

Spanich scored a career-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, as the Trojans squeaked past San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. ``I was talking with (teammate) Larry Ayuso before the game, and we feel like it's a shooters' arena,'' Spanich said. ``It's the kind of place I like to shoot in.''

Not too many other Trojans could make similar boasts.

The USC offense was stagnant most of the game, unless Spanich dropped in one of his long-range shots. He made of 7 of 11 3-pointers.

The Trojans' lack of offense drew the ire of Bibby, who continues to be frustrated by USC's inconsistent post players.

``You can't live with the jump shots every night,'' Bibby said. ``Right now, we don't have an inside game. We've got to have other people score for us (other than Spanich). Greg Lakey had two points tonight. He has to score more than two points for us. Shannon Swillis took three shots in 34 minutes. He has to shoot more than that.''

USC (4-1) appeared in command in the first half, taking a 30-18 lead as Spanich made three straight 3-pointers to increase the Trojans advantage.

But San Diego State (1-3) went on a 13-0 run to take a 31-30 lead, and the game was tied 38-38 at halftime.

It was the third straight game USC has blown a double-digit lead.

``I guess it's getting to be a trend,'' Bibby said. ``I thought we played selfish basketball. We played selfish the whole game. Those guys have to get better for us if we want to get better in the Pac-10.''

added 13 points. Swillis had a team-high eight rebounds.

Notes: USC suited only 11 players because reserve guard Seymour Daffeh has a sore knee and did not make the trip. Freshman point guard Kevin Augustine said he feels 75-80 percent, and is considerably less dizzy during the game. He has complained about dizziness and near-fainting spells, but is recovering from a virus that sidelined him for a game. Augustine played 11 minutes against San Diego State.
