PALMDALE - Northrop Grumman Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) is an aerospace and defense conglomerate that is the result of the 1994 purchase of Grumman by Northrop. The company is the third largest defense contractor for the U.S.  Corp. said its Integrated Systems sector has been awarded a $15.7 million contract to continue studies under NASA's Space Launch Initiative.

The program is a research and development effort to develop technologies for a second-generation reusable launch vehicle - a spacecraft that does not need to shed components like rocket booster Booster - A data-parallel language.

The contract brings the value of Northrop Grumman's work on the Space Launch Initiative to more than $108.3 million. Its Launch Systems Group is heavily involved with missile defense launch systems. , Dulles, Va., on this stage of SLI, Northrop Grumman will provide systems engineering and architecture definition for the second-generation RLV RLV Reusable Launch Vehicle

 program.

The reusable-launch program is meant to lay the groundwork for greater access to space for civil exploration as well as potential defense and commercial applications.

The contract has a renewal option upon successful completion of a review in March 2002.

Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems' work will be performed by its Air Combat Systems division in El Segundo El Segundo (ĕl sēgŭn`dō), industrial city (1990 pop. 15,223), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1917. Its products include navigation and computer systems, aircraft parts, office machines, telephone apparatus, and .

Northrop Grumman said the work uses the company's systems integration capability as well as advanced technologies derived from the design and development of aircraft such as the B-2 stealth bomber and the Global Hawk robot spy plane.
