SPACE, MILITARY WORK BOOST OPTIMISM.

Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Daily News Staff Writer

Government and military leaders Wednesday called the Antelope Valley's future ``promising,'' citing job growth from such projects as the development of a new spacecraft and the expected arrival of an electronics manufacturer.

Leaders from Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. ,'' Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford said. ``The X-33 is leading the way for our feeling of optimism.''

The X-33 is a prototype of a new spacecraft being developed by Lockheed Martin ``Skunk skunk, name for several related New World mammals of the weasel family, characterized by their conspicuous black and white markings and use of a strong, highly offensive odor for defense.  Works'' in Palmdale to replace the space shuttle. The program is expected to provide as many as 2,000 jobs.

Ledford also said Palmdale is close to completing a deal with an electronics manufacturer that would bring 300 employees into the Antelope Valley. Ledford would not name the company, saying it could hurt negotiations.

Lancaster Mayor Frank Roberts also cited the X-33 in his remarks, announcing the state's Spaceport space·port

Authority and Lancaster signed an agreement recognizing the city's role in developing the region as a launch site. The agreement will help the city in seeking a $1 million state grant to assist in the construction of a launch site for the X-33 at Edwards' south base.

Another project that will expand local employment is the flight test program for the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter The Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) contract was a demonstration and validation program undertaken by the United States Air Force to develop a next-generation air superiority fighter to counter emerging worldwide threats, including development and proliferation of Soviet-era Su-27 , which is expected to bring in 750 jobs. The first of 12 aircraft is expected to arrive at Edwards next fall.

``I think we have a tremendously bright future,'' said Col. Jimmy Doolittle, vice commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center.

On March 26, 1976 it was named in honor of the late Hugh L. . The move is expected to increase employment at Dryden by 300 workers, said Joe Ramos, associate director of Dryden.

``Dryden is the only one of 10 NASA field centers expected to grow,'' Ramos said.

In California City, a tire recycling plant is due to open in the spring. The plant is expected to hire 150 people when it is fully operational, said City Manager Steve West.
