USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  wide receiver R. Jay Soward's strained left hamstring isn't expected to sideline him Saturday against California, but the emergence of freshman Marcell Allmond Marcell Allmond is an American football cornerback. Professional career

has made the injury easier to handle.

Allmond had a 64-yard touchdown reception against Stanford last weekend and caught a career-high three passes for 90 yards against the Cardinal.

He will start Saturday if Soward can't play but should see plenty of playing time anyway with Soward less than 100 percent.

Allmond said he didn't expect the 64-yard pass play, which included bouncing off two Stanford defenders and racing down the sideline for the touchdown.

``I was kind of surprised I was that open,'' Allmond said. ``I was working in practice on not falling down after I got hit. I feel I'm always part of the offense but it felt great to contribute.''

Even after his breakthrough game, Allmond expects Soward to return against Cal.

``He'll be back. He always finds a way to come back,'' he said.

Palmer update: Tuesday night, quarterback Carson Palmer Carson Palmer (born December 27, 1979 in Fresno, California), is an American football quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League.  in place.

``I'd like to burn it,'' Palmer said.

Palmer was examined by doctors Tuesday, and said he is recovering ahead of schedule.

``They said it's coming along well. Next week, I might start doing upper body work and maybe even throw,'' he said.

Palmer is still sure he wants to return for the UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

game Nov. 20. ``Definitely,'' he said.

USC coach Paul Hackett said he was ``excited'' X-rays revealed the bone has grown back faster than expected.

But Hackett is still reluctant to say when a decision will be made on whether to bring Palmer back. He said when he coached in Kansas City, Chiefs quarterback Elvis Grbac needed seven weeks to recover, but was in poor physical condition when he returned.

``I'm open (to playing Palmer), but when you consider all the things, and that were not in the hunt for the Rose Bowl . . .,'' Hackett said. ``When you look at the big picture, everyone says it's better to have a third year (starting at quarterback).''

Palmer would have to redshirt to start three full seasons.

``You see what they've been through, and you hope a little something they say will tweak you,'' Hackett said.

Hackett said he would also call childhood friend Ron Hudson, who is the offensive coordinator at Kansas State. The Wildcats have overcome two 21-point deficits this season.

State of the line: Left tackle Brent McCaffrey sprained his ankle Wednesday and was carted off the field as a precaution. Trevor Roberts will probably start at left tackle.

Hackett said Donta Kendrick has recovered from his sore ankle and would probably start at left guard in place of Faasea Mailo, who is expected to miss the Cal game with a bruised shin.
