SOUTHWESTERN BELL'S CELLULAR ONE(R) OF CHICAGO INTRODUCES FIRST CELLULAR TRAVEL INFORMATION SERVICE IN UNITED STATES

SOUTHWESTERN BELL'S CELLULAR ONE(R) OF CHICAGO INTRODUCES
FIRST CELLULAR TRAVEL INFORMATION SERVICE IN UNITED STATES
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The cellular company that introduced the nation's first live cellular information sports line, Cellular One(r) of Chicago, today introduced the first live cellular travel information service.
Customers of Cellular One(r) of Chicago can now plan business trips and vacations from the convenience of their car or portable phone by dialing (star)TRAVEL (star 8-7-2-8-3-5). The new service is available at no charge beyond normal air time rates.
(Star)TRAVEL is being provided through an agreement between Cellular One of Chicago and the Carlson Travel Network. Customers can dial (star)TRAVEL and talk with a live travel specialist who can provide immediate information on flights, hotel accommodations, rental cars and vacation packages.
Cellular One of Chicago/Gary, an operating unit of Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems, and the other Bell companies gained the freedom to offer information services last year, when federal court rulings allowed them to enter the business. Information services are proving to be very popular, as more than 50,000 calls will be placed by Southwestern Bell customers this month to access everything from late- breaking news to lottery information.
"Our customers wanted this type of service and asked us to provide it," said Donna Morrison, director of marketing for Cellular One in Chicago. "They told us (star)TRAVEL will simplify their lives and make it easier to get things done while on the go."
At the same time Cellular One of Chicago and other cellular operations of Southwestern Bell are introducing new information services, a bill has been introduced in Congress that would force Southwestern Bell to disconnect these services from hundreds of thousands of cellular customers. House Bill 5096 would also place a ban on any Bell company re-entering the information service line of business.
"HR 5096 discourages competition and takes valuable services away from customers, people who need and want them today," said Tom Barry, senior vice president-strategic planning for Southwestern Bell Corp. (NYSE: SBC). "Our customers shouldn't be penalized. They should be given new, innovative ways of using their cellular service, like (star)TRAVEL and other information services."
Chicago's Cellular One customers can call (star)TRAVEL during weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to arrange travel plans. As an added benefit, discounted travel packages will be available to cellular customers through Cellular One's newsletter.
In Chicago, travel bookings, vacation packages and information will be provided by Adams Travel, a Carlson Travel network associate with five Chicago locations. Carlson Travel Network, a $7 billion company, is headquartered in Minneapolis.
Cellular One of Chicago offers a wide variety of other valuable information services. Sports enthusiasts can dial the nation's first live cellular information service, (star)SPORT, and talk with a live sports information specialist. These specialists can provide sports information on practically any sport or sporting event. For commuters, people stuck on the Kennedy Expressway can dial (star)-1-2-3 and get live traffic reports.
A live operator provides entertainment information by dialing (star)VIP. Would-be travelers dial (star)UAL to reach the United Airlines reservation desk to make reservations.
Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems offers similar information services in St. Louis, Boston, Washington, and Baltimore. The company plans to extend these services to other cities over the next few months. So far, the traffic-related information lines have proven to be the most popular service.
Southwestern Bell Telephone started testing its first information service earlier this year in Oklahoma. The service, called Message Delivery, offers customers on operator-handled calls the option of leaving a voice message when they get a busy signal or no answer after five rings. The message is delivered at a time specified by the caller, with up to 12 delivery attempts over six hours.
Cellular One of Chicago/Gary is the premier provider of cellular service telecommunications throughout Illinois and northwest Indiana. In the United States, Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems provides cellular service to over a million customers in 29 metropolitan markets and 25 rural areas. Mobile Systems' service areas represent about 36 million potential customers.
Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems is a subsidiary of Southwestern Bell Corp., an international communications corporation based in St. Louis with one million shareowners.
