SOUTHWEST WATER CO. ANNOUNCES TWO FAVORABLE REGULATORY ACTIONS

WEST COVINA, Calif., Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Water Co. (NASDAQ: SWWC) today announced that Suburban Water Systems, its principal water utility subsidiary, has been granted two water rate increases by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) totaling $630,000. These increases affect the utility's San Jose Hills and Whittier/La Mirada, Calif., service areas and went into effect on Jan. 1, 1994. They will help to offset higher utility operating expenses incurred by the company.
Further, on Jan. 7, 1994, Suburban received approval from the CPUC to retain $210,000 in income recorded from the sale of surplus land in 1989. This pivotal ruling allowed the utility to retain the income in accordance with the California Uniform System of Accounts for Water Utilities, as opposed to distributing it to ratepayers in the form of water rate reductions.
Southwest Water Co. is the parent company of Suburban Water Systems (water supply in parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties); New Mexico Utilities Inc. (water supply and sewage collection systems northwest of Albuquerque, N.M.); and ECO Resources Inc. (operational and maintenance services for water supply and wastewater treatment facilities across the western, southwestern and southeastern United States).
