SOUTHWEST AIRLINES MATCHES INDUSTRY ONTIME RECORD
DALLAS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Transportation

(DOT) has released its October 1992 Air Travel Consumer Report for August 1992 performance, and Southwest (NYSE: LUV) tied its own record, which was also an industry record, for the best ontime performance achieved by any airline since tracking began in 1987.
With 94.4 percent of its over 1,300 daily flights on time in August, Southwest's performance far exceeded the industry average of 80.3 percent. The closest competitor was America West, with 87.3 percent of their flights arriving on time in August.
The airline once again won the "Triple Crown," an achievement no other airline has reached even once. The "Triple Crown" is best ontime performance, fewest reports of mishandled baggage, and lowest number of customer complaints.
The report also showed that 3.76 bags were mishandled out of every 1,000 Southwest customers, when the industry average was 6.44 mishandled bags for every 1,000 passengers. With 5.62 reports of mishandled baggage, American Airlines came in second in this category.
In the customer complaint category, Southwest received only .07 complaints per 100,000 customers, and the industry average was 1.28 complaints filed per 100,000 passengers. Southwest's closest competitor in this category was Delta, which received .75 complaints per 100,000 passengers.
"Winning the 'Triple Crown' two months running is an achievement the Southwest Airlines team is proud of," said Colleen Barrett, the airlines' executive vice president-customers. "It is this consistency in offering 'Positively Outrageous Customers Service' which has enabled Southwest to remain profitable during the worst period in airline history," said Barrett.
