SOUTHLANDERS PAY TRIBUTE PARADE, OBSERVANCES HONOR AMERICA'S FALLEN.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

CANOGA PARK - Sixty years ago in the final months of World War II, Stephen Sherman was fighting for the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  in Okinawa, Japan, facing a determined enemy holed up in caves.

But the 84-year-old veteran from Van Nuys enjoyed a different experience Monday at the Valley of the Stars Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade, as he rode in a 1965 Cadillac convertible with a man dressed as Elvis. Sherman said he always finds a parade to be in on Memorial Day.

``It's just so I can remember the dedication that all the dead soldiers "Dead Soldiers" is the third episode of the third season of the HBO original series, The Wire. The episode was written by Dennis Lehane from a story by David Simon & Dennis Lehane and was directed by Rob Bailey. It originally aired on October 3, 2004.  went through during all wars that the United States have been in,'' said Sherman, who is retired from the airline industry.

``I've seen what war causes. All the people left behind, how they suffer. ... And I know that just coming here like this somebody, the ladies that I have helped today, the old people I have helped today, the women that waved back at me, I know that I just did something for them.''

He said he was aware of the death toll since the war began in 2003, but said ``seeing this puts the situation more into perspective.''

Tens of thousands of spectators cheered on the veterans at the 17th annual Canoga Park parade. They also hooted, hollered and blew into plastic horns as a wide variety of parade entries went by, including a double-decker bus A double-decker bus is a bus that has two levels. ``I think it's living up to the hype,'' Mack said. ``I've been to Mardi Gras Mardi Gras (mär`dē grä), last day before the fasting season of Lent. It is the French name for Shrove Tuesday. It's pretty good, it's good to see all the family and the support that we have from the local businesses.''

The parade began in the 1940s but became an annual event in 1989. This year Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa was cheered on with shouts of ``Way to go mayor!'' and ``I voted for you!'' as he rode in a convertible in the parade.

``I think the best part of this parade is you have an entire community here in Canoga Park who now for (years) have memorialized those who've died for freedom,'' Villaraigosa said. ``And it's such a big part of the fabric of this community that it really is exciting.''

Some children ran into the street to pick up candy thrown at them.

``The more you cheer the more they throw,'' said medical assistant Laura Valencio, 26, of Winnetka, who was at the parade with her parents, her husband, her two children and some nieces and nephews.

A man in his early 50s from Ridgecrest who was riding on a horse in the parade fell off and was later pronounced dead at a hospital, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Andre Risse of the West Valley station. The man, who police did not identify, did not appear to have been bucked from the horse and may have died of medical causes, Risse said.

Based on the increased number of entries, organizers estimated that 50,000 people may have been at the parade Monday, said Liz Peisner, a military coordinator for the parade. Some 30,000 attended last year.

Keith Smith, 80, of Canoga Park had to do some curbside repairs with some fellow Model A enthusiasts when the distributor failed on his 1928 Model A Ford. He fell behind and had to follow a club of Model T owners.

``It's not as bad as following the horses,'' Smith said.
