SOUTHLAND SITES TIE DESERTS IN ARIZONA AS HOTTEST SPOTS.Byline: Sherry Joe Crosby Daily News Staff Writer Feel a little hot lately? Well, there's good cause. Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, ranked with the Arizona deserts Wednesday as having the hottest weather in the nation, with Imperial in southeastern California and Coolidge and Casa Grande Casa Grande (kä`sä grän`dā), city (1990 pop. 19,082), Pinal co., S Ariz.; inc. 1915. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-80s today, but the good news is that it should start cooling off - possibly by five to 10 degrees - by this weekend, said Weather Service meteorologist Robert Baruffaldi. Baruffaldi said a coastal eddy may form over the Pacific Ocean, bringing low clouds and, yes, even fog, to the region. Wednesday's Civic Center high of 86 was 13 degrees above normal but a long way from the record 97 set in 1941, Baruffaldi said. Although the temperatures fell well short of the record, it felt plenty hot to Lindey Stewart of Burbank, who escaped to Malibu State Beach. ``There's a point in the canyons when you can feel the temperatures drop by at least 10 degrees,'' she said of the trip to the beach. ``In the Valley, it's hot, it's smoggy and you come by the beach and there's a light breeze light breeze n. At Accurate Climate Control in Canoga Park, secretary Cindy Moran said her phone has been ringing off the hook. ``Everybody calls at the last minute. They wait until it gets hot then they can't understand why they can't get someone out there right away,'' she said. ``And it's only gonna gon·na Informal Contraction of going to: We're gonna win today. get worse.''
