In an average rainy season, which runs from July 1 to June 30, Pierce would have seen 12.33 inches fall by Wednesday's date.

``If we rained a foot, we still wouldn't be at normal,'' said Pierce weather observer Steve Woodruff.

Even in 1960-61, the driest year on record, 5.5 inches had fallen by this time. The year ended up with only 6 inches total falling.

forecasters said showers could return by Friday night as the jet stream pushes storms down from the Pacific Northwest. Weather Specialist Stuart Seto said the storms could continue to bring rain until a high- pressure system strong enough to push them back emerges.

``For now through Sunday, we don't see that happening,'' he said.

The season total to date for downtown Los Angeles is 3.74 inches, compared with 4.28 inches during the same period last year and the average of 9.6 inches.

High temperatures today through Sunday will range from the low to mid-60s, with lows hovering around 50, Seto said. Waves on beaches along Ventura and Los Angeles counties have been stirred up by the storm and will roll in between 4 and 6 feet through Friday.

Despite its relative lack of power, Wednesday's storm caused a small rock slide that closed lanes of La Tuna Canyon Road, in addition to hundreds of crashes Wednesday.

The Sun Valley hillside unleashed rocks and other debris onto the 8400 block of La Tuna Canyon Road about 8 a.m., said Los Angeles Department of Public Works spokeswoman Linda Aparicio. Crews had the spill cleared in less than an hour, she said.

Otherwise the rain produced no mudslide problems in the city or county, officials said. California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Perez said 456 crashes were logged countywide from 12:01 a.m. to late afternoon Wednesday, when clouds began to part.

``It's been kind of the perfect rain where it doesn't cause much damage and it wets everything up,'' said county Public Works Department Many governments worldwide have had departments or ministries referred to as the Public Works Department either formally or informally.
