SOUTHLAND IN LINE FOR TRAIN FUNDS.

Byline: Bill Hillburg Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - A federal planning grant for a proposed 240 mph magnetic levitation magnetic levitation or maglev (măg`lĕv), support and propulsion of objects or vehicles by the use of magnets. The magnets provide support without contact or friction, allowing for fast, quiet operation.  train that would link key transit hubs in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  will be announced today, officials said Wednesday.

The Southland is competing with six other metropolitan areas for $10 million in federal planning funds to be awarded by U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater Perhaps you would like to read about one of:

and ``Southern California will be taken care of,'' said a source familiar with the ``maglev'' project.

Federal officials declined comment. The exact amount of the grant and the distribution of funds among competing projects is unknown.

Jeff Lustgarten, spokesman for the Southern California Association of Governments, said Wednesday that the agency is hopeful it will get some federal support.

``Whatever funding we get, we'll be able to move ahead with this project,'' he said.

Maglev, a technology pioneered in Germany, uses electrically charged motors to propel trains that literally float above a monorail monorail, railway system that uses cars that run on a single rail. Typically the rail is run overhead and the cars are either suspended from it or run above it. .

Construction costs for the Southern California line are estimated at $5.85 billion, with funding to come from revenue bonds that would be retired with fare income. Construction could begin in 2002, with completion targeted for 2010.

Backers argue that maglev's construction cost - $65 million a mile - is a bargain compared with subways and freeway lane additions, which cost an estimated $200 million per mile.

Maglev is also backed by the California High Speed Rail Authority, which hopes to eventually build a statewide network of fast trains.

Maglev supporters have already laid plans for future expansion, including a route from Union Station to Van Nuys, Santa Clarita and Palmdale Regional Airport.
