might finally end today, after residents in parts of the region awoke Wednesday to near-freezing temperatures and a new low record for Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

Temperatures today should start returning to normal for this time of year, with highs in the mid-60s by Friday and lows from the mid-30s to the lower 40s, said National Weather Service meteorologist David Gomberg.

``A high-pressure area is moving in over us, building in with warm, dry weather and weak Santa Ana winds Santa Ana Winds may refer to:
1. Santa Ana wind, a local Southern California reference to Föhn winds, a meteorological phenomenon occurring as a layer of wind is forced over a mountain range -- drying the air -- which then passes over the crest and begins to move downslope --
,'' Gomberg said, adding that no rain is forecast through at least Monday.

Warmer temperatures will come as a welcome relief to scores of Valley residents who have flooded repair services with calls to get their forced-air heaters working.

``We're just beside ourselves with heating calls,'' said Anthony Fleitas, operations director at Plumbing One's office in the Calabasas-Agoura area. ``Most people are saying the same thing: We've been using our space heater. Now they're having to turn on the big mamas Big Mama might be:
  • Big mama, an Internet censor on web bulletin boards in the mainland of the People's Republic of China
  • Big Mama (group), a band of four female R&B singers in South Korea
  • Big Mama Thornton (1926-1984), an American blues singer
, and they're not working.''

The drop to 33 degrees in Simi Valley before dawn Wednesday broke the previous low record for the date of 36 degrees, set Dec. 23, 1990. Chatsworth tied its record low of 33, also set in 1990.

The temperature plunged to 31 in Burbank, but that was not a record.

The weather got no warmer than the upper 50s on Wednesday in most areas of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

In Ventura County, farmers appeared to be holding their own in the fight to keep crops alive through the cold snap.

Losses had not yet been tallied by Ventura County agricultural officials, but farmers making inspection rounds said the potential for disaster appeared to be waning.

``From what I can tell so far, the damage is very light,'' said Richard Pidduck, a lemon and avocado avocado (ä`vəkä`do, ăv`–), tropical American broad-leaved evergreen tree of the genus Persea of the family Lauraceae (laurel family).  grower in Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc.  Canyon, whose crops were wiped out by the 1990 freeze. ``I'm happy. This is a nice Christmas.''

Still, growers Wednesday were bracing for one more night of temperatures in the mid-20s before temperatures started their expected climb today back to typical levels.
