SOUTHLAND CALM BEFORE NEXT STORM; RESIDENTS OUT, ABOUT AS SUN SOAKS REGION.

The Southland got a break from the rain Sunday, bringing clear skies Clear Skies could refer to:

As the region dried up, dog-walkers, shoppers and animal lovers took advantage of the 70-degree temperature to attend to much needed tasks.

Elsewhere in the Valley, residents ignored the foretelling signs of gathering storm clouds and tried to forget the past couple of weeks.

Jones took the day off to shop at the Topanga Plaza mall.

``I just needed some time to just do something fun,'' she said, adding that her home had fallen victim to mudslides as well as insects that were escaping from the dire weather.

Department officials once more issued a warning to stay away from storm drains and areas where a sewage spill has occurred.

``These rains have brought all of the buildup in the storm drains down into the water and any contact with the water could be dangerous,'' Wanglin said.

A coalition of local, state and federal officials was working around the clock to clean up between 8,400 and 21,000 gallons of crude oil that had spilled into School Canyon in Ventura on Saturday, when a pipeline ruptured after a rain-soaked hillside gave way.

No one was injured in the landslide and no property was damaged.

The rupture severed a natural gas line that sparked 100-foot flames that were quickly put out by firefighters Saturday.

Authorities were not sure how much oil had spilled into the ocean but estimated that one barrel - or 42 gallons - had contaminated contaminated,

Waves up to 10 feet were forecast in Ventura County, with maximum sets at 12 feet on west-facing beaches, the National Weather Service said.

Rain is expected once again to damper Valley residents' spirits, when the next El Nino storm rolls in tonight bringing as much as 4-1/2 inches of rain in some areas, the Weather Service said.

``Rain tonight is likely, extending into Tuesday and clearing by Wednesday,'' said Stuart Seto, weather specialist.

But by Thursday night, the rain could once again return, Seto said.

``There is a chance of rain late Thursday, but it's a little too early to tell whether or not we'll get hit,'' he said.

``I don't want it to rain any more,'' said the 23-year-old Topanga Hills resident. ``I'm scared to drive in the rain.''

Other Valley residents echoed Mendoza's sentiments, lamenting the flooded streets, mudslides and other nuisances that seem to accompany each storm.

``It just seems like that when it rains, everything that can go wrong does,'' Jones said.

``I've decided to just go with the flow,'' Mark Penniston said with a smile.

The 42-year-old West Hills resident spent the day playing with his dogs, Jasmine and Pepper, and ignored the roof leaks that have plagued his house since mid-January.

``I just don't feel like fixing it,'' he said. ``When the storm comes again, I'll just get out my bowls and go with it.''
