 Man falls off boat at Pyramid Lake

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  - Deputies searched for a man who fell off a boat Saturday in Pyramid Lake in the Angeles National Forest, a sheriff's spokesman said.

The man, who was not identified, was near the dam at the south end of the lake, located about 10 miles south of Gorman, when he fell overboard about 2:40 p.m., said Deputy Brian Jones.

Jones said the man wasn't wearing a life preserver.

The U.S. Department of Labor on Friday awarded Los Angeles a $17.8 million grant for its summer youth employment program.

The announcement, released by Mayor Richard Riordan's office, means the city's program, which finds jobs for 13,000 teen-agers, will be able to continue for the coming year.

``This funding will give thousands of young Angelenos the opportunity to find jobs - and the dignity, pride and self-esteem that goes along with those jobs,'' Riordan said. ``We have an obligation to our youth. They are our future and they want to be contributing adults. We have to give them that chance.''

SHERMAN OAKS - A man was arraigned Thursday on charges stemming from the shooting death of a 69-year-old man who was found dead in his Sherman Oaks home, police said.

Elmer Mendoza, 24, was arraigned on charges of murder, using a gun during the commission of a felony and grand theft auto, said Detective Stephen Fisk Fisk   , James 1834-1872.
