SYLMAR - Police officials were investigating the death of a 70-year-old man whose body was discovered Friday near El Cariso Regional Park.

Guadalupe Arreola Perez was found dead about 11:20 a.m., the apparent victim of a head wound, police said.

Foothill homicide detectives are investigating the incident, and seeking help from the public, said Sgt. Frank Reynoso. Anyone with information can call [phone].

WOODLAND HILLS - Fire gutted the attic and garage of a house in the 6700 block of north Nevada Avenue at approximately 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Losses were estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $15,000 to its contents, said fire officials, who blamed the fire on a natural gas leak behind a clothes dryer. No injuries were reported. A 9-year-old neighbor helped the house's residents get out quickly by knocking on their door when he saw smoke, fire officials said.

WOODLAND HILLS - A man wearing a stocking mask took about $5,000 after holding employees of a Woodland Hills coffeehouse at gunpoint, police said.

The workers at Starbucks, 5422 Topanga Canyon Blvd., were putting down chairs and opening for the day about 5:05 a.m. when they were confronted by the gunman, said Los Angeles police Lt. Ray Lombardo of the West Valley station.

No injuries were reported.

The robber got into a dark blue Nissan pickup and drove off.

Lombardo said this was the second robbery at the business in about a month. It wasn't immediately known if the robberies were related.
