SOUTHLAND: BRIEFLY : FIRE CHARS 15 ACRES AT PARK IN GLENDALE.


GLENDALE - A 14-year-old boy was being held Saturday in connection with an investigation of a 15-acre brush fire in Brand Park, police said.

The fire started at about 2:30 p.m. in Brand Park at 1601 W. Mountain St. No injuries were reported, a Glendale Fire Department spokesman said.

Responding to the blaze were 15 engine companies from Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena as well as four water-dropping helicopters from Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city and Los Angeles County fire departments, the spokesman said.

AGOURA - Four people were cited Saturday in Agoura Hills for violating the city's day laborer law prohibiting the solicitation of services or donations from people traveling in motor vehicles.

The citations were part of a sting operation Noun 1. sting operation - a complicated confidence game planned and executed with great care (especially an operation implemented by undercover agents to apprehend criminals)  at Kanan and Agoura roads, in which an undercover sheriff's deputy posing as a day laborer ticketed drivers who asked for work in exchange for wages.

The city law was passed in 1991 after residents and businesses complained of traffic safety problems along Kanan and Agoura roads, where laborers gather to look for work each morning.

Driver burned trying to save motor home

VAN NUYS - The driver of a motor home was burned when he tried to put out a fire in the vehicle early Saturday, a Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles.  spokesman said.

The driver, who suffered second-degree burns on his hands and one foot, was taken to the Sherman Oaks Hospital Sherman Oaks Hopital (SOH) is an 153 bed acute care facility in Sherman Oaks, California, USA and is home of world renowned the Grossman Burn Center. SOH is owned and operated by Prime Healthcare Services, Inc.  and Health Center, Bob Collis said.

The motor home was ``totally engulfed'' in fire by the time firefighters arrived at Burbank and Sepulveda boulevards at about 1:30 a.m., he said.

The crew of one fire engine made short work of the blaze.

Stabbing takes place on roof of old hotel

PASADENA - A stabbing atop the Green Hotel left one man hospitalized and another in jail, police said Saturday.

Scott Chasen, 34, of Pasadena underwent surgery following the attack shortly after 8 p.m. Friday and remained hospitalized in stable condition Saturday, Lt. Phlunte Riddle said.

Police were seeking one other man, Riddle said.

The motive for the attack was under investigation. It also was unclear why Chasen was on the roof, Riddle said.

52 years to life given to Rose Bowl rapist

PASADENA - A Monrovia man was sentenced to 52 years to life in prison for raping a teen-age girl at the Rose Bowl.

Demetrelle Jones, 24, was sentenced earlier this month. Jones claimed the sex was consentual and that the girl was a prostitute.

Prosecutors said Jones grabbed the teen-ager from an Altadena street and brought her to the Rose Bowl parking lot, raped her and then left her in Pasadena.
