SOUTHLAND: BRIEFLY : COUNCIL WILL SETTLE POOL FIRM LAWSUIT.


The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  dived Tuesday into taxpayers' coffers for $270,000 to settle a dispute over who was to blame for a year of delays in building an indoor swimming pool at Cleveland High School in Northridge.

The council approved the $270,000 payment to Mega Construction Co. to settle the North Hollywood firm's lawsuit, which claimed that the city Recreation and Parks Department caused delays in the project by making design changes and failing to obtain the final inspection in a timely manner.

At issue was a $2.5 million project begun in 1991 to build an indoor pool at the high school. The city Recreation and Parks Department took possession of the project in December 1993.

Sullivan allegedly committed the robberies between Christmas Eve and last week, sometimes targeting two victims in the course of a day, said Deputy District Attorney Carol Fisch.

Man denies guilt in bomb threat

A man who forced an evacuation in the Hollywood area after claiming that he had 5,000 pounds of dynamite in his truck, pleaded not guilty to felony charges Tuesday.

Prosecutors have charged Abram Nacham, 64, with making terrorist threats, making a false bomb report and possessing a false bomb. He remains in jail with bail set at $500,000.

On Saturday, Nacham parked his truck in front of KCAL-TV (Channel 9), demanded to talk to U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and surrendered hours later.

Police arrest man released in error

A murder suspect mistakenly released from the Los Angeles County jail was back in custody after more than three months on the lam, authorities said Tuesday.

Gregory Wayne Stinson was arrested by San Bernardino police Thursday, and returned to Los Angeles County law enforcement officials Monday, said Sgt.
