SOUTHLAND: BRIEFLY : COUNCIL OFFERS REWARD IN GIRL'S FATAL SHOOTING.


The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  voted Friday to offer a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gang suspects believed responsible for the Jan. 16 shooting death of 17-year-old Corie Williams on a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus.

Councilman Rudy Svorinich Rudy Svorinich (born 1960) is a Republican who served on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 15th district. A resident of San Pedro, his diverse district also includes the community of Watts. He was elected to the council in 1993 and served two full terns.  Jr. introduced the reward motion, saying it was necessary to ``send a loud and clear message across the city that this kind of behavior, where a young, innocent girl's life is tragically taken away by two alleged gang members, is a situation we cannot tolerate in this city.''

City to weigh tax cut for multimedia firms

Hoping to keep and attract high-tech multimedia businesses, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city officials agreed Friday to study cutting taxes for firms in the budding industry.

The Los Angeles City Council voted 10-0, without comment, to study the impact on rolling back tax rates from $5.91 to $1.18 per $1,000 in gross receipts the total of the receipts, before they are diminished by any deduction, as for expenses; - distinguished from net profits.

Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  had called for the change, saying the city's tax code needed to be changed to keep the industry in Los Angeles.

Extension of curfew on use of road backed

The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to approve an 18-month extension for the nighttime closure of Mulholland Drive between Encino Hills Drive and Santa Maria Road, citing continuing concerns about criminal activity in the area.

The council first voted in June 1995 to close the remote, 6.4-mile stretch of dirt roadway from dusk until dawn and during fire-hazard periods because of concerns about loitering Loitering (IPA pronunciation: ['lɔɪtəˌrɪŋ] is an intransitive verb meaning to stand idly, to stop numerous times, or to delay and procrastinate. , illegal dumping and arson.

A fire gate blocks vehicular traffic, but bicyclists and joggers can still use the unpaved roadway, according to Cheryl Fallon-Weaver, an aide to Councilman Marvin Braude.
