The Spartans used defense to take command early and then held off the Falcons 8-5 at Caltech and advance to the championship game.

What it did was force 18 steals and set up most of the Spartans' goals at the other end of the pool.

``It kept (C.V.) from thinking, `I can pass it, what do I do?' '' La Canada coach Larry Naeve said. ``The defense works nice in a pool (so small). The whole idea is to not give any kickback passes and shots. Our defense makes our offense much easier.''

Michael McDay, the Spartans' junior 2-meter man, says such an aggressive attack takes its toll on both his team and opponents.

``It's hard, but it paid off for us at the end. We came in here really concentrating on defense,'' said McDay, who led the Spartans with three goals. ``We tried not to let (C.V.) pass it inside to the 2-meter mark.''

The Falcons (21-4) had to play catch-up almost from the opening sprint. La Canada won it and Naeve found the net just 13 seconds into the game.

La Canada led 2-1 after one quarter and used its defense to dominate the second quarter and take a 5-1 advantage into halftime. Two of the three second-period goals were scored off steals, the other following a Chang blocked shot.

``They played great defense. They have speed, more than we do,'' Falcons coach Pete Loporchio said of La Canada. ``We couldn't get our counterattack Attacking an attacker. We made a lot of poor passes.''
