As the Spartans watched the Oilers celebrate their third championship in four years, they tried to console themselves with the notion that their season isn't over and they'll have added incentive to win a title at this weekend's inaugural Masters tournament Masters Tournament

``Now they've got something to prove,'' La Canada coach Larry Naeve said. ``If they'd won tonight, there wouldn't be much left for them to prove.

``Now they have to come back and really play hard to try to redeem themselves. I hate to make it sound like in any way that it was good for us to lose this game, but it'll give us something extra to play for this weekend.''

The Spartans (23-9), who had spent the entire season ranked No. 1 in the division and easily defeated Montebello in the season opener, almost didn't have to wait until the weekend to prove itself.

Mike Scott's second goal of the fourth quarter gave La Canada a 9-8 lead with 1:10 remaining in regulation. But Montebello freshman Jonathan Ruiz scored 20 seconds later and the Spartans would never lead again.

``We just made too many mistakes,'' said Naeve, whose team never led until the fourth quarter. ``We got a lead at the end there, then leave a guy open. ... They're kids, they make mistakes, hopefully they'll learn from it.''

Borisoff led La Canada with five goals, including two on penalty shots.
