SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL TITLE ESCAPES ROYAL.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

The Royal High School boys' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. Marc Chaffee led Royal (20-1) with 24 kills and John Baxter had 77 assists.

``We couldn't stop No. 15 (Alleman),'' Royal coach Bob Ferguson said. ``We tried different things, and we didn't dig him very well. We didn't block him very well. We haven't seen a player like No. 15 all year. Nobody was close to his ability.''

Nor could Royal stay close to its own passing ability consistently.

``When we were passing poorly,'' Ferguson said, ``it made it a lot easier to block us.''

``They stepped it up,'' Wilson said. ``We felt pretty confident after the first game, and even after losing the second game we felt we were good enough to come back and win.''

Esperanza and Royal had split in two previous matches in the final. The Highlanders won a five-game contest in 1992, and the Aztecs, led by former UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

Ryan Denihan (20 kills) was the top hitter for Royal, getting six kills on the new lob (1) See BLOB.

, who usually is the team's first option in a match, had just two of his 19 kills in the first game. But Flanagan also had three stuff blocks, including the game-winner.

Esperanza, in the second game, figured out Denihan's set and blocked him three times, twice by Chad Willardson. This left Flanagan as the main option, and he came through with five kills for Royal in the second game.

``Oh my gosh! That was unbelievable,'' Wilson said of the net violations. ``A couple of times, we'd get a good point or a good sideout. I thought that could have taken some emotions from us.''

Esperanza stopped relying on Alleman and started setting other options. Alleman and Dan Harrington For other persons named Dan Harrington, see Dan Harrington (disambiguation).

had three kills apiece in the second game. In the third game, which lasted 45 minutes, Herzer blocked Alleman and then Anderson for a 2-0 lead, and Royal stretched that advantage to 4-0.

Esperanza later went ahead 14-12 but Royal tied the score on a Chaffee kill and an Esperanza net violation.

Alleman and Anderson blocked one each to give the Aztecs the third game, in which each team was called for two yellow cards.
