``We just needed to get warmed up,'' Knudsen said. ``We've worked hard, and I knew my players could handle a long match.''

Santa Ynez moved to Div. II this season after reaching the finals in either Div. IV or Div. V nine consecutive years. The team has won four consecutive lower-division championships.

In addition to moving up in class, Santa Ynez faced another obstacle when one of its top hitters, Matt Pedersen, went down with an injury.

But after finishing the regular season with a 12-5 record - well below the team's usual standards - Pedersen returned for the playoffs and invigorated in·vig·or·ate

Yet Pedersen's presence wasn't enough against Valencia.

Valencia fell behind 5-0 in the first game before rallying to pull ahead 13-8. But the Vikings then allowed the final seven points to lose 15-13, falling behind by one game.

Santa Ynez (15-6) scored the first two points of the Game 2, but Valencia roared back by scoring 15 consecutive points to win 15-2 and even the match 1-1. Valencia followed with a 15-6 victory in Game 3 to take a 2-1 advantage.
