Arone, the Calabasas High girls' volleyball coach, acknowledged earlier this week his top hitter hurt her ankle a couple of weeks ago in a match against Agoura.

But he declared her to be 100 percent, which Niles later disputed.

On Thursday, in the first round of the Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs, Niles' injury wasn't in doubt, but neither was the outcome.

Niles' 15 kills and 18 digs helped the Coyotes sweep Alemany for the second time this season, 15-9, 15-5, 15-11.

But Niles clearly didn't dominate, which was OK with Arone for two reasons. First, he said, ``Whether she's 50 percent or 100 percent, she's still better than anyone else on the court.''

Second, the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. It operates mostly in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either.  champion Coyotes (19-0) showed the balance that has carried them throughout the season. ``It's better this way,'' Niles said. ``It's easier on our hitters.''

Especially when they're hurt. Niles hurt her ankle on the first set she received in the Agoura match, which she said figured because she had just thought how she had never been hurt before.

This left Arone with the question of what to say when people asked about Niles. He said he decided the best thing was to hide the truth.

``No one's gonna gon·na

go after her (by exploiting her injury),'' he said.

That held true for Alemany (8-9), who was led by Coral Florian with seven kills.

Coach Susan Terrusa never told her players Niles was hurt because she wanted them to think they had to play their best to win.

Unfortunately for Terrusa, the Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

weren't on top of their game, getting just 26 kills. But they did push Calabasas in the first and third games, and stretched out the match length to 78 minutes.

``(Playoffs are) a new experience, a lot different pressure, and they didn't handle it,'' Terrusa said. ``We were a little inconsistent. Someone had to set a fire under them. Next year, hopefully.''
