SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS: VIEWPOINT MEETS MATCH IN WHITNEY.

CERRITOS - The good news for the Viewpoint of Calabasas boys' tennis team Thursday was it posted a better result against Southern Section Div. V opponent Whitney of Cerritos than any other team in the playoffs this year.

The bad news is that the performance didn't do the Patriots any good. They lost 14-4 to the top-seeded Wildcats in the semifinal match at the Cerritos Sports Complex.

The four points earned were two more than Oakwood of North Hollywood managed in the quarterfinals, but that if was little consolation to the Patriots.

``My team didn't play poorly,'' Viewpoint coach Asif Azhar said. ``They played their best.''

Viewpoint (18-2) was particularly overwhelmed in doubles, losing all nine sets to the Wildcats. Nigel Beckmeier and Ben Brody were closest to earning a point, coming from behind against Robert Lee and E.R. Elchilo to even the score at 5-5 before losing 7-5.

Geoffrey Chizever earned three of the Patriots' four points, sweeping all three singles sets. Whitney's No. 1 singles player, Tim Lee, was serving for the set at 5-4, but Chizever fought back for the 7-6 (7-4) victory in his second set of the afternoon.

No. 2 singles player Tyler Mullen earned Viewpoint's fourth point with a 6-1 victory over Andy Shin.

Chizever (57-1) lost his only set of the season to Marco Pineda of Don Bosco of Rosemead in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
