SOUTHERN SECTION SWIMMING RELAYS: HART RALLIES IN FINAL EVENT, TIES FOR THIRD SOPHOMORE COMES THROUGH IN RELAY.Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News LONG BEACH - The fate of the Hart of Newhall girls' swim team in Saturday night's Southern Section Relays rested on the not-so-broad shoulders of three freshmen and a sophomore. Fortunately for coach Gina McCarthy, that sophomore was Molly Rogers, the only member of the Indians who had previously competed in the Belmont Plaza pool in a high-profile high school competition. Rogers, who helped Quartz Hill win the Southern Section Div. IV title last season before transferring to Hart - a Div A DIV Associate of Divinity . Rogers, who teamed with Rachael Krager, Katie Oakey and Kate Pellymounter on the final relay, helped Hart move into a third-place tie in the relays-only competition with Aliso Niguel, each team finishing with 44 points. After the third-place plaque was initially awarded to Aliso Niguel, the decision was reversed when the head-to-head tiebreaker tie·break·er n. When the information was delivered by the meet's public-address announcer, it sparked a celebration by the Indians, who had six athletes on their varsity roster swimming in the frosh/soph competition - as did several other teams Saturday - because they were age-eligible. ``I just wanted to beat the people next to us,'' said Rogers, who helped Hart move from a tie for fourth with Long Beach Wilson into the third-place tie, trailing Tesoro of Rancho ran·cho n. pl. ran·chos Southwestern U.S. 1. But the Indians knew it would be an uphill climb to record a top-three finish with Aliso Niguel competing in the 400 freestyle relay and Hart waiting on the pool deck after failing to qualify in Thursday's prelims. Krager, Oakey and Pellymounter kept Hart close on the first three legs, allowing Rogers to make up a 1.42-second deficit and hold off Aliso Niguel.
