``I wasn't even a (butterfly swimmer) before this year,'' McVey said. ``But Matt and Tyler helped me a lot because they felt I would be a good 'flier. They helped me train the whole season and it showed.''

Quartz Hill's girls' 200 medley relay team also qualified for today's final but didn't do as well as anticipated, earning a sixth seed with a time of 1:58.62.

``The energy was there, but because the event was early in the morning, we didn't swim that fast,'' said Thibault of his medley relay team, which is composed of Maia Paris, Jesica Neal, Ashley Frost-Morgan and Sarah Colvin. ``(Today) though, they're going to go all out. They'll be ready for it.''

Michele Kumaus of Highland of Palmdale is looking forward to stronger competition after earning a second-seed in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.89. In her heat, Kumaus was nearly four seconds faster than the next-fastest swimmer, Amanda Harshberger of South Hills.

``I swam strong considering there really was no one good in my heat to race,'' Kumaus said. ``I look forward to stronger competition in the finals. I'd rather be pushed and not win than win a walk against lesser competition.''

Kumaus is also seeded second in the 100 breaststroke after a time of 1:07.09.

Brett Shiflett of the Oaks Christian of Westlake Village girls' team is seeded third in the 200 freestyle finals after a time of 1:56.21.
